Austria is a mountainous, land-locked country in south-central Europe. It bordered by Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, Italy, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, and Germany. Though several languages are spoken in Austria, most people speak a dialect of German known as Bavarian.

Vienna

Vienna is Austria’s capital and is known as the music capital of the world. The city is located on the Danube River and on the northeastern foothills of the Alps. After Berlin, it is the second-largest German speaking city in the world. Many famous classical musicians and composers like Beethoven, Mozart, and Brahms, lived and worked here. Vienna was also home to Sigmund Freud. Archaeological evidence shows that Vienna has been continuously habited since 500BC when it was settled by Celts. It has played a significant role in historic world events in the millenniums since.

Salzburg

Salzburg was settled by the Celts and once part of the Roman Empire. The city is known for its natural beauty and architecture. Salzburg is the birthplace of Mozart and a transport hub for Austria. The city’s economy is built largely around the manufacture of instruments, textiles, hardware, and leather goods. There are also numerous large breweries in Salzburg.

Accommodations in Austria

Although Salzburg is a tourist destination, there are fewer options than some other major cities so the prices tend to be a bit higher. There is one dormitory style hostel with good ratings and some Airbnb options. Vienna is a larger city so accommodations are more plentiful but still a little pricey. There are a lot of hostel options – private and dorm style – as well as Airbnb.
