Netherlands, also sometimes called Holland, is a low-lying country in northwestern Europe. Its name is literally translated to ‘low-lying’ and 6,500 sq km of the country is reclaimed land from the sea and interior lakes and marshes. This was done during medieval times through water management practices like dikes and pumps. The Dutch have long had a reputation as being socially progressive. Dutch is the official language but many citizens speak several languages and in cities there is a fair amount of English spoken.
